Let’s pull back the curtain on professional judging — because it’s not glamorous, and it’s definitely not what people imagine.

Here’s the truth:


If you rely on other people’s opinions, you’re drinking their whiskey, not yours.

I have been told by countless people they have tried hundreds of whiskies but only like brand “X.” So I go home put together a 4 sample panel that’s blinded to them. About 1 out of 100 can actually pick out their favorite product.


A. Ratings Are Entertainment, Not Gospel.


Whiskey ratings are:

  • One person’s opinion

  • On one day

  • With one set of sensory receptors

  • In one environment

  • Using one glass

  • With one mood

  • And possibly one hangover

Meanwhile, you’re a completely different human being.


B. The Danger of “Chasing Scores”

If you only buy bottles with high ratings:

  • You’ll spend too much

  • You’ll miss hidden gems

  • You’ll ignore your own palate

  • You’ll end up with a shelf full of whiskey you don’t enjoy

It’s like dating based solely on someone else’s type.Sure, they like blondes with a sense of humor — but maybe you like brunettes who can deadlift.
